Since it's kind of obvious a lot of teams AHL teams are 34+, I think it's a good idea to get a bit more youth into the league. Plus, it can be tough for bottom teams to rebuild, especially if they get shafted in the lottery. If a team is stuck in the bottom 3 for 2 consecutive years, they get 4 18/19 year olds coming up, without even acquiring another 1st.
I think the bottom 3 teams in the standings should receive a '2nd round pick.' The player they receive will get an automatic +5 (which is the value of a 2nd + 3rd round booster picks, missing a 4th). They can use additional boosters on the player, but there will be a lower limit than the 26-30 overall max.
This could really help with our depth issue, and the fact 50% of the backups + AHL goalies are 33+
So to be clear... Bottom 3 teams in the standings (regardless of the lottery finish) would receive these picks. 3 additional prospects would be added to the draft, so there will always be overages moving into future drafts, or eventually becoming college UFAs.
